Most people who call us about a garage have been thinking about it for years. They've outgrown whatever they have, they've moved somewhere with land and no restrictions, and they finally have the space to build what they actually need rather than what fits on a standard residential lot. We've heard this conversation enough times to know that the first question is almost never "what's the smallest thing I can build?" It's "what can I actually do with this space?"

Post-frame construction is the right method for a detached garage or hobby shop for the same reasons it works for ag buildings: clear span interiors with no posts eating into your usable space, eave heights that work for tall vehicles and overhead equipment, and the ability to design the layout around your specific use rather than around what the framing allows.

Whether you're building a two-car garage, a six-car heated shop, an RV storage building, or a woodworking studio you'll use every weekend, we start with what you need and design from there.

FAQs

  • What door height do I need for an RV?

Most Class A and Class C motorhomes require a minimum 13.5-foot clearance, which means a 14-foot door to provide a reasonable margin. Measure your specific RV including the air conditioning unit on the roof — that's the highest point on most motorhomes. When in doubt, build for 14 feet. A 12-foot door that just barely clears today won't clear after you add a rooftop solar panel or upgrade to a taller unit.

  • Can I heat a post-frame shop through winter?

Yes, effectively and efficiently — if the building is properly insulated. A spray-foam insulated post-frame shop with a properly sized propane or natural gas unit heater will stay comfortable at any outdoor temperature the Midwest produces. In-floor radiant heat is an option for concrete slab shops and is popular with customers who spend long hours standing in the building. A mini-split handles both heating and cooling for finished studio or office spaces. We'll help you think through the right system for how you plan to use the building.

  • Do I need a permit for a detached garage?

Outside city limits on rural property, detached garages and shops are often exempt from state building code requirements, though county zoning setbacks still apply. Inside city limits or in planned subdivisions, permit requirements vary significantly — some municipalities require permits for any accessory structure over 200 square feet. We'll help you figure out what your specific location requires before any design work begins.

  • How deep should my garage bay be for a truck and trailer?

A full-size pickup truck runs about 20 feet. Add a standard car hauler and you're at 40 feet. Add a gooseneck livestock trailer and you're at 50 feet or more. Our recommendation for anyone planning to store a truck-and-trailer combination inside is a minimum 50-foot bay depth, with 60 feet preferred if budget allows. You want room to walk around the rig, not just fit it in with the tailgate touching the door.
